KAIROS is a project to install in Chile a SAT for « cleaning » (from polarised foregrounds contamination) the CMB maps obtained by the Simons Observatory (SO) collaboration. KAIROS is at present seeking for funding and in case will integrate the SO. In the framework of this project, at Institut Néel we have built a cryostat for testing the superconducting spinning mechanism of the huge polarisation modulator (half-wave plate) of KAIROS. This sub-system, together with the focal planes, will be crucial for this project.
Below: the cryostat built by our group and containing a prototype spinning mechanism for the KAIROS half-wave plate.
